Airway obstruction, and in particular sleep apnea, is commonly undiagnosed problem in many adults today.
Untreated apnea can contribute to
*hypertension
*heart disease
*diabetes
Many people with persistent aches and pains end up in physical therapy, without any idea that they may also have an airway problem that is contributing to their symptoms.
Common symptoms of poor sleep and possibly airway obstruction
*headaches
*fibromyalgia
*nocturia (waking at night to urinate)
*feeling fatigued during the day in spite of sleeping at night
*restless legs
*snoring
*dry mouth, dark circles under eyes
Poor sleep can the be the barrier to tapping your potential. If you're not sleeping well, your body is not repairing itself at night and neither is your brain. This can prolong other problems to the point that they become chronic issues.
As part of a team approach a specially trained physiotherapist can assess and treat your head, neck and mouth to improve your cranial facial posture as well as space for your airway.
While it may seem counter-intuitive, the structures that create your airway are not set in stone! Treatment to the head, multiple layers of fascia in the neck, as well the TMJ and palate inside the mouth can profoundly affect your ability to breath at night.
