Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation

Did you know that when you have back pain, the some of the muscles that stabilize you spine can get inhibited or "turned off"?  Research has shown that even when the pain is gone, the muscles do not necessarily get "turned back on."

That's where skilled hands on techniques like Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) can help you fully rehabilitate after an injury.

PNF techniques tap into neural pathways that help your body remember how to move even after its had pain.
By contacting the skin and using force components like approximation and traction with resistance, the muscles that control rotation, shear, and stability of joints can be more effectively reinstated.
This means your stronger and potentially less susceptible to re-injury.

At West Physiotherapy, we specialize in helping patients complete their rehabilitation by using specialized hands on treatment like PNF.

In cases of arm and neck pain, tapping into shoulder girdle patterns can help resolve pain and restore function.
Knee, hip and ankle pain benefit from restoring pelvic patterns.

Our body uses different muscles differently!

Some are long and used to move joints and tend to turn on and off frequently as we move.  And some are shorter and cross only one or two joints.  They work more consistently to stability joints and benefit from being worked just like they used.  For longer low load holds.

This is why advancing your exercises to quickly can result in injury.  If you don't have the underlying stabilizing muscles online and strong, then working with longer/bigger mover muscles can result in injury or pain that keeps you from reaching your goals.

We can help you exercise not only harder, but smarter!
